MOVE BETTER, BE STRONGER
What a journey it’s been so far for me at ODIN! Before I joined the January 2017 ROOTS class, I was a run on the treadmill for 20 minutes and do a few sit-ups in the corner kind of workout person. It’s not that I particularly liked this- I just didn’t know what else to do. So, with that being my regime, I was admittedly a little intimidated at the thought of crossfit- particularly of lifting weights and lifting them with other people watching me (I used to practice a strict “don’t look at me, don’t talk to me, I’m not even here” approach when I went to the gym). But I’m so happy to say that has since drastically changed.
I can’t stress enough how helpful the ROOTS class was in introducing me to the crossfit movements. Unlike working out at other gyms, I never once felt dumb or embarrassed trying these new movements. Starting from the first day in ROOTS, the coaches have constantly reminded me how important safety is, which was really comforting knowing that they have your back and aren’t going to sit by idly if you are doing a movement wrong. Within a few classes, the coaches knew who I was and made a point to get to know me, my past experiences, what I wanted to accomplish, and help me figure out what weights and movements I should be doing during each workout. It felt really good not just being member #___ and actually feeling like I was a part of something.
And the people here- just genuinely good people. Since I joined ODIN, there has always been someone looking out for me. Whether that’s showing me the right way to do something when I’m doing it wrong, offering to help me figure out what weight I’m doing for the workout, or cheering me on through the workouts, there’s always been someone watching out for me. They’ve helped push me out of my comfort zone to do things I didn’t think I would be able to accomplish and have really made ODIN feel like a second home that I’m excited and motivated to come to.
So that’s just a snid bit of my journey so far here. It doesn’t even begin to cover all of the laughter, sweaty high-fives and fist bumps, after WOD beer chats, and so many other amazing experiences I’ve had since I joined, but you get the picture-I maybe kind of love it here at ODIN.
I’m 73, and I hope that I can stop being the oldest at Odin because we need more of us who want to think and stay young. Odin has really changed my life. I’m in the best shape ever. I love my friends here. I look forward to whatever crazy WOD there is for the day, even including snatches and burpees. I love the interaction with people who are half my age. It make me feel half my age. I love the emphasis, not just on working out, but on nutrition, friendship, learning sign language, crazy activities, bringing in food, and participation in THE OPEN. For the past two years I’ve been able to do it in Charleston, SC, and in Prague. This really added to my tourist deal. I mean, I was on a Road Scholar trip (formerly Elder Hostel) in Prague, and it gave me the opportunity to venture to parts unknown there and, believe me, no one else on that trip did the Open!! I also would like to add that I have become an expert scaler, meaning that I know the alternative things to do if I can’t do an Rx activity, like a handstand pushup…it’s just not happening. So thank you, thank you, Allison and the gang, for really adding to the quality of my life! And to anyone who is over my age, for goodness sake, join me!!
Before joining Odin I have struggled with self confidence and an eating disorder. Odin has given me this opportunity to change the way I think about lifting weights, exercising, and food. I have come so far and have built up so much confidence that I never thought I could have. I cannot thank Odin’s program and coaches enough for all that they have done for me.

I joined Odin less that one year ago, and I already feel stronger than ever! At first, some of the moves seemed daunting and impossible, but with the help of Odin's dedicated and patient coaches, I feel like a beast! Odin's workouts leave room for improvement every day.
